A smart, budget-conscious hard surface option that delivers beautiful results without compromise.
Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic product that uses a photographic layer to realistically mimic the appearance of wood, stone, or tile. Modern laminate has come a long way from its early iterations — today's products feature embossed textures, realistic grain patterns, and improved durability that make them a compelling choice for budget-conscious homeowners who want the look of hardwood without the price tag. At House of Floors, we carry quality laminate products that balance aesthetics, durability, and value, and our installation team ensures every floor is laid with the same care and precision we bring to every project.
Laminate cannot be refinished — once the wear layer is compromised, the planks need to be replaced. It is also not waterproof (though water-resistant options exist), making it unsuitable for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or areas prone to standing water. Laminate can also feel slightly hollow underfoot compared to solid hardwood, though quality underlayment can significantly improve this. For homeowners looking for a cost-effective, attractive hard surface in above-grade, low-moisture areas, laminate is an excellent choice that we're happy to recommend.
No. Laminate has a wood-fiber core with a photographic layer and a clear wear layer on top. LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) has a solid vinyl core and is 100% waterproof. Laminate is generally harder and more scratch-resistant, but LVP is better for moisture-prone areas.
Standard laminate is not recommended for kitchens due to moisture risk. However, some manufacturers offer water-resistant laminate products that perform better in kitchens. We'll advise you on the best option during your consultation.
Laminate thickness ranges from 6mm to 12mm. Thicker laminate (10–12mm) generally feels more solid underfoot, offers better sound absorption, and is more forgiving over minor subfloor imperfections. We typically recommend 8mm or thicker for residential installations.
Quality laminate flooring typically lasts 15–25 years in residential settings with proper care. The wear layer thickness (measured in AC rating) is the primary indicator of durability — we'll help you select the right AC rating for your traffic level.
