Timeless, warm, and enduringly valuable — nothing elevates a home quite like real wood underfoot.
Hardwood flooring has been the gold standard of residential flooring for centuries, and for good reason. The warmth, character, and natural beauty of real wood is unmatched by any synthetic alternative. At House of Floors, we supply and install both solid hardwood and engineered hardwood — giving you the flexibility to choose the right product for your subfloor, climate, and budget. Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like: a single piece of milled wood from top to bottom. Engineered hardwood features a real wood veneer over a stable plywood core, offering greater dimensional stability and suitability for a wider range of installation environments.
Solid hardwood is sensitive to moisture and humidity fluctuations, making it unsuitable for basements, bathrooms, or areas prone to water exposure. Engineered hardwood is more forgiving in these respects. Both options require proper acclimation before installation and benefit from a stable indoor climate. Hardwood also requires more maintenance than LVP — it should be swept regularly, cleaned with wood-safe products, and protected from standing water. That said, the ability to refinish hardwood means a well-maintained floor can last 50–100 years, making it a genuinely long-term investment.
Solid hardwood is a single piece of milled wood, typically 3/4" thick, and can be sanded and refinished many times. Engineered hardwood has a real wood veneer (typically 2–6mm) bonded to a plywood core. Engineered is more dimensionally stable and can be used in more environments, including over radiant heat systems.
Solid hardwood is generally not recommended for kitchens due to moisture risk. Engineered hardwood is a better option for kitchens, as its plywood core is more resistant to expansion and contraction. We'll advise you on the best choice during your consultation.
This depends on traffic, maintenance, and the thickness of the wear layer. Most solid hardwood floors can be refinished 3–5 times over their lifetime. Engineered hardwood can typically be refinished 1–3 times depending on the veneer thickness.
We carry a range of species including oak (red and white), maple, hickory, walnut, and more. Species vary in hardness, grain pattern, and color. We'll help you select the right species for your lifestyle and aesthetic during your consultation.
